“He’d be a great signing” – should Gers go for £50k per week international?

Earlier in the summer a report emerged that England international Harry Winks had been offered to Rangers, a player who, only a few years ago, was tipped to be a major player for both club and country.

Things haven’t quite gone to plan though and the 26-year old is no longer a bright prospect and should instead be at the peak of his powers, however, Tottenham Hotspur are now desperate to get him off the wage bill either on loan or permanently.

With two years still to run on his current deal at Spurs he will probably have to take a step backwards in terms of wages because, if Rangers were to take the Premier League side up on their offer, it’s safe to say that his £50,000 a week salary would be out of our reach.

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern though, former Sky Sports reporter Peter O’Rourke reckons that Winks would be worth the punt:

“He’d be a great signing. If they can get someone like Harry Winks, just a few years ago Harry Winks was in the England squad. And obviously, it has not worked out for him at Spurs under the last couple of managers, but he’s still a very talented player.”

Winks is too similar to Glen Kamara for my liking, neither a dominant number six, nor a proper box-to-box number eight or a playmaking/goalscoring number ten, a highly capable midfielder but just not what we need – especially when you consider how much it would cost us.
