We are heading for another shut out for football fans in stadia across the country, Wales already taking the decision to close the doors due to rising numbers of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 and Scotland allowing just 500 into grounds around the country irrespective of the size of stadium.

I fully understand that if there are more cases, there is more likely to be hospitalisations, however, the numbers we are seeing just doesn’t match the measures being taken – worst case scenarios will always paint the bleakest of pictures.

Two years after the coronavirus first reared it’s ugly head and we, in reality, are no nearer to being returned to “normality” if you can remember what such a thing is, and it is down to one thing and one thing only, an absolute failure of government both north and south of the border.

The obsession with vaccinations is understandable, it helps to prevent the population from getting hit with the full effects of a virus that has killed millions worldwide, however, we all know that it doesn’t matter how many times your arm gets poked with a needle, you can still catch and transmit Covid-19 to others and this is why MPs and MSPs are considering locking us down again, but surely there is a better way.

On the most basic of levels, if you don’t have coronavirus, you can’t pass it onto someone else, if only there was a fast and easy way to find out whether or not you were infected…

There must be a way of allowing football fans, rugby fans, music fans or anyone who wants to attend a large event of proving that they have taken a lateral flow test and are negative, I refuse to believe that such a system couldn’t be developed – if they wanted to.

It is the easiest way to limit the damage that has already been done to the hospitality and entertainment industries and for the general population that has suffered – and had – enough.
