It’s safe to say that Rangers will continue to be linked with right wingers until someone either makes the place their own in the current squad, or we sign someone who is perfect for the role.

The latest name that has been put forward is that of Az Alkmaar’s Albert Gudmundsson, a 24-year old Iceland international with six goals in 29 caps, according to a report in The Telegraph.

He moved to the Netherlands at a young age and featured in the academies of both Heerenveen and PSV Eindhoven before moving to Alkmaar in 2018 where he signed a four year contract – if your maths isn’t the greatest, that means his contract is about to expire next summer.

Gudmundsson ticks a lot of boxes, he won the Eredivisie with PSV and has a record of a goal or assist every three games with his current club, in the right set up and formation, he could really flourish, especially in one that dominates possession and gives wingers the chance to get isolated with their opposing full-backs.

With six goals and two assists from his 23 appearances, Gudmundsson has enjoyed a decent if unspectacular start to the season, it’s more goals than Ianis Hagi has from a similar number of games and he has been playing in team that is sitting seven points clear at the top of the league.

A proven international on a pre-contract agreement or reduced fee, with experience in a competitive league, at a good age to develop and sell on further down the line, what’s not to like?
