Future Gerrard replacement, longing for an Ibrox return for SFA nemesis

After seeing Barry Ferguson, Kevin Thomson and Gennaro Gattuso take up new managerial positions I wondered if we would ever see any of them back in the hot seat at Ibrox one day, then, my day-dreaming took me further away, who has the right character to follow Steven Gerrard and take the reins at Rangers?

He may have been a British record transfer fee at the time but Duncan Ferguson could never be branded a success during his time in Glasgow, ironically, he had just started to find a bit of form before being shipped off to Everton for his and the club’s own good – and we all know why.

I love Ferguson, outside of Rangers he was probably my favourite player as a youngster and, thankfully, he always seemed to go to teams I had a soft spot for already, I always felt his story was always one of “what might have been?” in a Light Blue shirt.

But, with Carlo Ancelotti heading to Real Madrid we could be about to see Fergie given another chance to be the main man. He won one, drew two and lost one in a tricky run of fixtures as interim boss before the Italian was appointed and 18-months learning from one of the game’s greats will have served him well, but I’d love to see him sitting in the dugout at Ibrox.

Who finished as Rangers top goal scorer this season?

What we have learned with the success of the current regime is that the manager has to be statesman-like, think Graeme Souness, Walter Smith, Dick Advocaat and Alex McLeish, let the team around him deal with tactics, fitness and set-pieces and the man in charge set the example for others to follow and aspire to.

He would be absolute box office at Rangers. Ferguson has a great reputation as a coach but he would be more than that at Ibrox, he would be a figure head, like Gerrard, someone who commands respect, and when he walks into a room, everyone pays attention – oh aye, and he really hates the SFA.
