We saw a mini manager merry-go-round at the weekend with two former Gers stars taking a step up in their respective coaching careers and one moving on to another high profile appointment.

Barry Ferguson left Kelty Hearts after seeing them to promotion to League 2 and Kevin Thomson took his first senior management role when he stepped down from his “B” team role at the Rangers academy to replace his former midfield partner.

On the continent, another shy and retiring midfielder took the reins at Fiorentina, Gennaro Gattuso continuing to do enough to suggest that there is a good manager there, his last day failure to get Napoli into the Champions League offsetting his earlier Coppa Italia win.

Ferguson has taken position in the hot-seat at Alloa Athletic hoping to gain promotion at the first time of asking following their relegation from the Championship but what does the future hold for the three, could they end up back at Ibrox?

Who finished as Rangers top goal scorer this season?

One thing we’ve learned from Steven Gerrard’s tenure is that his replacement has to be someone of similar standing in terms of gravitas, not necessarily on a world stage but they certainly need to be able to command respect in the dressing room and this three would certainly do that.

But, the other thing we’ve learned is that whoever does replace the gaffer has to have the right people around him, I’ve no doubt that Fergie, Rino and KT can inspire a dressing room but football has changed, and it will be interesting to watch each of them as they kick off next season at new clubs – will we ever see them at Ibrox? We’ll need to wait and see.
