Our squad for next season is already taking shape and after another successful transfer window we can start to look at who might still be here going into 2021/22.

Here I take a look at who stays, and who goes, from those approaching the end of their contracts.

Allan McGregor

Steven Gerrard has already spoken about his love of “world class”Allan McGregor and that any decision on his future will be entirely down to the keeper, having just turned 39, he has nothing to prove and – with a body that has shown a couple of signs that it is starting to creak – I think he’ll bow out at the top. He also knows that, in Jon McLaughlin, he has a safe pair of hands to pass the mantle over to.

Verdict – retiring as a hero.

Leon Balogun

Pound for pound one of Rangers best ever free transfers. We saw what happened to our defence when Filip Helander was injured last season but when the big Swede was out this year, Leon Balogun showed exactly what we had been missing – an experienced centre-half who could be trusted to step in without any drop in quality.

Verdict – the option of another year taken up.

Steven Davis

Similar to Allan McGregor, Gerrard is arguably his biggest fan and any decision on his future will be down to the player himself. The biggest difference for me is that he doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of deterioration either in form or physically, few would argue if he gets the nod for player of the season.

Verdict – one more year.

Greg Stewart

You can’t blame a player for joining a club they supported as a boy, especially for someone at his stage of his career. He has never let Gerrard down when called upon but just doesn’t have the mobility required to be part of a dynamic front three. A decent return in terms of goals/assists per minute but there were always better players ahead of him in the queue.

Verdict – released.

Ross Wilson has done a great job since he arrived, almost every player can be trusted and we have fewer – if any – players picking up a wage without making some sort of contribution, we’ll need to find something else to moan about now.
