Dave King loves a comeback doesn’t he?

The former chairman’s association with Rangers goes back to when Sir David Murray was in charge, a man unlikely to be on King’s Christmas card list, however, after saving the club in 2015 and laying the foundations that have got us back to the top of Scottish football he had to step down to concentrate on business affairs at home in South Africa caused mainly by the Covid-19 pandemic.

He has announced that he is looking to re-join the board though which should be welcomed, having the largest shareholder on the outside looking in was always going to be a strange set up, King told the Glasgow Times:

“Now that my business interests in South Africa have been stabilised following the devastations of Covid, I have advised the board of RIFC plc that I am available to re-join the board and offer my services to the further development of the Club.

“I remain the largest shareholder of RIFC and look forward to many years of service to the Club and, most importantly, to its supporters.”

King’s situation is well known, he had looked to sell his shares to Club 1872 but that deal now appears to be dead in the water due mainly to the fans’ distrust of the organisation in terms of how well it is being run, there will be some who meet this news with suspicion but I don’t think he is looking to cause trouble.

If he wants his money back or a return on it, the club has to be doing well, it is in his best interests to make sure that we keep progressing – a club in the Champions League will attract bigger and better sponsors than those in the Europa League, they would also be more likely to attract shareholders or other wealthy fans willing to take his share off his hands.

We know that he has put his hands in his pockets for us before and Rangers as a club has grown exponentially across every aspect of the organisation in the last five to six years, if he is willing to do so again, King’s return should be welcomed with open arms.
