Champions League boost that could see Goldson stay

We’ve seen in recent weeks against Celtic and in the Europa League just how good a player Connor Goldson is and how difficult it will be to replace him if he does decide to leave the club this summer, he was outstanding in the two legs against RB Leipzig against one of Europe’s most sought after strikers.

He’s never said one way or the other what his plans are which suggests that there is still hope of a contract extension being signed, a decision that would make our summer recruitment plans a whole lot easier.

When he has spoken in the past, he mentioned creating a legacy and he also talked about the club progressing, now, if the events of the last few days don’t have some sort of bearing on making his mind up then there isn’t much else we can do.

Getting to the final of a European competition isn’t something that he will be able to achieve at some of the clubs being credited with an interest in the 29-year old plus, does he really want to spend his best years attempting to get out of the Championship or facing relegation battles when he could be competing for trophies?

Above all this though is the news that Rangers will only face two Champions League qualifying ties should our second place in the Scottish Premiership be confirmed and we don’t win the Europa League, these games will also be against opponents from second tier leagues like our own and more than winnable, when you compare them to teams we have faced in the past there is certainly nothing to fear – even failure leads to guaranteed Europa League group stage football.

With some of the names set to leave or retire, keeping someone like Goldson is hugely important, of course, if he wants to return home for family reasons then there isn’t much we can do but, given his importance to the team and what is potentially at stake, Ross Wilson should all but present him with a blank cheque and get him to fill in the gaps.
