Could England U-21 cap with 150 EPL appearances replace Goldson?

Regardless of your opinion on him, Ross Wilson has a decent contact book and it’s one that he should open ahead of the summer transfer window when we will need to add reinforcements to a squad coming to the end of it’s natural cycle.

Looking at his former club Southampton and one such example is Jack Stephens, the 28-year old centre-half who has fallen out of favour at St Mary’s this season and is set to leave on a free transfer in just a few months time,

The England Under-21 international is currently valued at £7.2million on Transfermarkt, coincidently, the same as the man he could replace, Connor Goldson and has nearly 150 games in the Premier League under his belt.

Stephens has hardly missed a game in the last five seasons but after starting this campaign as one of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s first choice centre-halves, a minor knee injury sidelined him and he has been unable to regain his place.

This is exactly the sort of player we should be looking at to add depth to the middle of our defence and for all that his £48,000 per week salary is out of our reach just now, the time that he has spent out of Southampton’s team means that he won’t be able to demand a similar pay packet.

We can’t expect Leon King or a project player to come in and replace Goldson, Stephens might not have European experience but he has more than enough games against some of the best strikers on the continent.

There are elements of the Gers support that still doesn’t rate our vice-captain but we might be about to find out just how good he has been when we try to replace him.
