Every season we see figures being banded about as to just how much the Champions League would bring in to the club, £30-40million being the usual numbers presented.

As with our coefficient ranking and where we will enter qualifying next season in the likely event that we don’t win the league, the best and most accurate information is to be had on twitter where their accounts dedicated solely to such. There is, of course, a great chance that we could bypass qualifying altogether if we beat Eintracht Frankfurt in a couple of weeks time.

The Swiss Ramble has provided a fascinating insight into the differences between ourselves and Celtic and how much we could potential make based on estimated results, proviso being made for better results in the group stages.

One major variation is that for individual finances, coefficient is based over a ten-year period which, because we only returned to European football in 2017/18, means that we there is a large gap where we have no points at all – this equates to a difference of £5m in real terms should we perform a minor miracle and win the league, Celtic set to earn £30m and us £25m, not including gate receipts.

The £25m is a similar figure to what we reportedly stand to earn this season from going so far in the Europa League proving that UEFA’s second tier competition is not one that we should turn our noses up at, thankfully, should we make a mess of the qualifiers for the Champions League, we still have this safety net to fall back onto.

The Champions League and mixing with Europe’s elite is still the dream though, for all that budgets will never again be set based on qualification, it wouldn’t half help with paying the bills and attracting better players.
