It’s been quite the few days in football, The Super League has been announced then cancelled, the new Champions League format has been revealed and Scott Brown had to pay for a MyGers membership just to get back into Ibrox after being sent for a hotdog by Ryan Kent.

The Super League appeared from the outset to be very much a game of cat and mouse with the 12 “founding members” looking to work with UEFA and FIFA as well as the domestic governing bodies in the hope that their dream became a reality – a dream that was over no sooner had it started.

As always, it comes down to money, talks of “legacy fans” and “future fans” doing little to justify what can only be described as a money grab, as Gary Neville put it, how can it be fair for these teams to play in a closed shop and earn hundreds of millions more to then turn up at the weekend’s against teams that don’t have access to the same resources?

But in the future could such a breakaway affect Rangers? Indirectly, maybe, If the Champions League is weaker by the absence of teams that regularly make the latter stages then it will obviously trickle down to qualifying and potentially the group stages, however, UEFA’s proposal sees teams that have historically done well in the competition given a reprieve if they don’t qualify via their own domestic league.

Take this season for example – with Leicester City and West Ham United competing for Champions League places we could see Chelsea and Liverpool given a free pass, would we have to face teams like that in qualifying? Probably, because, as always, it’s about the “big” teams and not a single thought will be given to the rest – a quick look at The Super League tells you everything you need to know, money talks.
