Gers face Old Firm transfer battle with youth international yet to make transfer decision

|

Rangers are continuing to look to the future with their transfer plans but face an Old Firm fight if the want to land Kyle Joseph.

The Wigan Athletic striker has yet to decide on his next club or extend his stay at the DW Stadium and the Scotland youth cap remains a target for Steven Gerrard, according to Football Insider.

The Light Blues were linked with Joseph during the January transfer window but a back injury has seen the 19-year old’s progress halted in recent weeks, five goals from 14 appearances drawing admiring glances for a player who had been linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

Rangers will definitely be in the hunt for at least one striker with Jermain Defoe unlikely to be retained, Cedric Itten will be bumped up the pecking order but much will depend on what Alfredo Morelos decides to do and whether or not Champions League football is enough to keep him interested in another season long slog of Scottish Premiership “action”.

Joseph wouldn’t be getting signed to replace either of Defoe or Morelos but he would form part of an attacking unit, similar to the role that Itten currently fills, doing a job when called upon and chipping in with goals and assists.

There should always be a mixed recruitment strategy where players that can be developed and sold for a profit are signed alongside established senior players that can contribute immediately – Joseph, if we are still interested, would certainly be one for the future.
