“For goodness sake” – Ronny Deila better than Steven Gerrard?

See when Celtic were winning everything or at least being handed things via Zoom calls, you couldn’t keep the likes of John Hartson, Chris Sutton or Kris Commons out of the papers, they’ve been quiet for the last few months but, unsurprisingly, they have crawled out from under their stones after Rangers Scottish Cup defeat to St Johnstone.

Sutton clearly cries himself to sleep at night after losing out on the Holy Grail of 10-in-a-row, if of course you include the 2019/20 season that wasn’t finished, and he seems to think that our record breaking league title success this season is somehow diminished by not winning any cups.

Commons however, well, sometimes it’s better not to say anything at all and he has once again reminded us why he isn’t seen on our TV screens as often as he used to be by claiming that Ronny Deila, yes he who had millions to spend and still ended up in title races with Aberdeen and got beat off a Rangers side from the Championship, achieved more than Steven Gerrard, as reported by the Glasgow Times.

“Make no mistake, the defeat to St Johnstone yesterday will have hurt Gerrard. He knows that it will raise fresh scrutiny around himself and his players. Success in the league does not make Rangers immune to criticism.

“Gerrard has won one trophy in the space of three seasons. It’s not a particularly great return.

“For goodness’ sake, even Ronny Deila managed to win a Double. In fact, it would have been a Treble had it not been for a horrendous handball decision against Inverness in the Scottish Cup. Clearly, Rangers and Gerrard are not the finished article.”

Poor Kris, for a start Deila inherited a title winning team with a budget ten times greater than anyone else in the country, and if he wants to bring up refereeing decisions, Rangers would have won the League Cup in 2019/20 but for an offside goal incorrectly given and would still be in the Scottish Cup if Kemar Roofe had been awarded a free-kick in the 120th minute against St Johnstone.

That he claims Gerrard’s side couldn’t be called “invincible” if they go through the Scottish Premiership campaign without losing is also bizarre, Arsenal didn’t win the treble under Arsene Wenger and yet they still carry that tag, from the man that claimed we’d have to spend £100million to catch up, we shouldn’t really expect anything less I suppose.
