Gers still stronger where it matters, as Celtic ignore biggest weakness

We saw it all last season, and we are seeing it again this year.

One of the biggest reasons Rangers were able to run out comfortably winners against Celtic in the first Old Firm derby of the season was because of the gulf in the respective squads.

Rangers had several players and staff out sue to Covid-19 protocols with others unavailable because of injury and players like Ryan Kent, Borna Barisic and Fashion Sakala nowhere near match fit going through the pain barrier to get the job done.

When they were chasing an equaliser they brought on Tom Rogic, a player who has done nothing against Rangers in the three and a bit seasons Steven Gerrard has been at Rangers, who did we bring on?

Scott Arfield, an experienced international with a great record in Old Firm derbies and John Lundstram, a player fresh from one of the toughest leagues in world football. Both of these players would improve Celtic’s starting XI and yet we were still missing Ryan Jack and had Juninho Bacuna also on the bench.

Who scored the winner in Sunday's first Old Firm of 2021/22?

For our third choice right-back to be man of the match is another indicator of where we are, I don’t think they even have three players capable of playing right-back, that they had to put their newest signing at left-back with Greg Taylor missing through injury says it all – an injury to Callum McGregor or one of their centre-halves and they are really struggling.

They seem intent on ignoring what their biggest problem is – defending – and continue to be linked with more forwards when any idiot can see where they are lacking – not that I’m about to start complaining about them leaving 6ft 3inch Swedish centre-halves unmarked at corners mind you.
