Several of Steven Gerrard’s Rangers players were linked with moves away from Ibrox in the summer, one of those being Alfredo Morelos, however, Porto – the club who were most interested – got nowhere near the club’s valuation for the Colombian international.

There has been some Premier League speculation over the years and, ironically, one of the clubs rumoured to have kept an eye on Morelos was Crystal Palace, who have since signed Odsonne Edouard and, speaking to bonuscodebets.co.uk, former Celtic manager, John Barnes, reckons that this could be the level that our own star striker reaches:

“Not many players from the Scottish Premiership go to England and play for Liverpool, Manchester United or Manchester City because those clubs go for the best players in the world and those types of players aren’t playing in the Scottish Premiership.

“However, I do believe that Odsonne Edouard can do very well at Crystal Palace.

“What we’ve seen with Virgil Van Dijk is few and far between. That was something that Liverpool fell on.

“I don’t necessarily feel that we’ll actually see players come down from Scotland to go to Arsenal, for example.

“Alfredo Morelos, for example, he’s a superstar up at Rangers but none of the big teams in England are going to be interested.

“Odsonne Edouard can do very well at Crystal Palace.

“He’s strong, quick and he’s got a good club with a good manager, so I think he’ll do well.”

There’s a few things that Barnes has missed the target on, a few players have left Scotland to go to the Premier League and done well and that includes going to teams like Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool hardly “fell on” Van Dijk, he’d been quality for Southampton and the Netherlands, everyone knew about him.

Weirdly, he’s backed Edouard to do well and yet Morelos has scored more goals and has more assists to his name in a shorter period of time, he also has a natural physicality that the former Celtic striker lacks.

Morelos will one day leave Rangers and nobody has ever suggested that it would be to go to Barcelona or Manchester City, but to suggest that players haven’t and couldn’t make an impact at “bigger” clubs in an insult to the likes of Glen Kamara, who could walk into Arsenal’s midfield and improve it immediately – I’d also suggest that the same player is better than Scott McTominay at Manchester United too, but that’s none of my business….
