“No shortage of interest” – reliable source makes Gers transfer claim

When Stewart Robertson revealed after our AGM that we were on course to post a profit for this financial year, fans became understandably excited at the prospect of us becoming a self sufficient football club.

The profit projection was just as Steven Gerrard left for Aston Villa, Nathan Patterson signed for Everton and we went on an incredible run to the Europa League final, we shouldn’t just be on course for a profit, we should be breaking records.

All this adds up to fans being justified in thinking that we should be spending a decent amount of money this summer, not Dick Advocaat sums, but decent none the less.

On top of this, there should be one or two sales with Calvin Bassey in particular likely to be attracting attention, The 4th Official giving a fascinating insight into his current situation on Patreon:

“There has been no official bid for Calvin Bassey too but that one I suspect, is a matter of time (this one is speculation on my part).

“I had a chat with one of the most famous journalists out there (don’t want to reveal his name) and there is no shortage of interest in Bassey. There will be some negotiation over the fact that Rangers want a minimum of £25m to let the Nigerian defender go, but that is to be expected.”

If we manage to get our valuation for Bassey then Giovanni van Bronckhorst would have every right to ask for every penny of it to strengthen his squad and it could be that this is why we’ve not seen any movement in terms of incomings yet because having more money to spend could mean a better quality of player being targeted.

In a “normal” year I wouldn’t expect this but, due the reasons already explained and the fact that we are guaranteed, at least, group stage football in the Europa League, it would be a great opportunity to take the squad to the next level – the level that we need to reach if we have genuine Champions League aspirations.
