The fallout from the Super League soap opera saw stories of a proposed British Premier League re-emerge and the debate about the Old Firm’s ability to survive in England’s top flight returned.

It’s one of those ones where nobody genuinely knows the answer, Rangers can point to their recent Europa League success and some of the teams we have beaten, however, it’s a different story when you have to compete with multi-million pound players every week and would we be able to attract a better calibre of player to compete?

Speaking to Football Insider, Kevin Phillips reckons that we could adjust, however, he isn’t keen to see us making the move over the border:

“First and foremost, I don’t see that [British League] happening,”

“It would destroy Scottish football just like the European Super League would have destroyed the Premier League.

“If it was ever to happen, in stature Rangers are a club who sit side by side with some of those clubs in the ‘big six’.

“It would be amazing for them but I personally would not want to see it just for the sake of Scottish football.

“It would be difficult because they’d have to spend a lot more in terms of transfers if they want to compete with those clubs.”

Phillips is right, there is almost no chance of Rangers or Celtic moving to England, UEFA might allow it but there just wouldn’t be the support from the English teams that might feel their place at the top table is under threat.

The biggest reason is the Champions League, finishing second in the Scottish Premiership now gets you access to Europe’s elite competition, whereas in the Premier League it would be a battle just to get into the Europa League – we could compete in time, but like Phillips, it’s a no from me.
