Less than Windass, Gers right to throw out derisory offer

Watford just offered less for Borna Barisic than we got for Josh Windass, I’ll let that one sink in for a while.

This is the same club that paid £5.5million for Craig Dawson – a solid if unspectacular centre-half and certainly not a player who has been a regular starter for one of the best countries in the world over the last few years.

Watford’s cheek is to be expected, for years we have undersold our best players and the narrative that we “need the money” won’t go away over night, that Everton attempted to get Nathan Patterson for £3.5m before finally having to shell out as much as £16m says it all about who we now have doing our negotiating.

Barisic – despite Calvin Bassey’s form this season – is our first choice left-back and has been close to his best in a Rangers shirt since Giovanni van Bronckhorst arrived, not having to spend as much time in the final third is definitely benefitting his overall play.

At 29-years old, he still has a good few years ahead of him too, it’s not Football Manager, players don’t automatically start to decline the minute they turn 30 and Barisic is a fine athlete, because Patterson has been sold we now have even less cover at left-back, this makes the Croatian international even more valuable to us.

Keiran Trippier is about to sign for Newcastle United for over £12m and is 31, players will only ever be worth what a club is willing to pay and for Barisic, it’s a hell of a lot more than £2m.
