We have been waiting a long time to get a first glimpse of Bongani Zungu in action for Rangers, but when it arrived, it was certainly worth it.

As with the transfer saga of the summer that saw the deal lurch from all but signed, to off, then back on again, the 28-year old South African international has had to be patient before finally getting his big moment and when he replaced Ryan Jack at half-time against Hamilton on Sunday, he took it with both hands.

Steven Gerrard’s midfield might only be eclipsed by the defence this season in terms of performance – which could have made it hard for Zungu to get his chance – but with a season that could easily see over 60 games, there are going to be plenty of opportunities for game time, and if he plays as he did against Hamilton, there is nothing to suggest that he can’t force his way closer to the front of the queue when starting jerseys are being handed out.

His first real involvement, 20 seconds into his debut, almost led to a goal, a raking 50-yard diagonal to Ryan Kent – that he backed up himself – was followed by an intricate through ball back to Kent in behind the defence, three passes and all of them created space for other Rangers players.

There were also several occasions when Zungu’s first touch was a pass that turned defence into attack, a change in style from Jack who would drive out from defence with the ball but equally as impressive,Ross Wilson securing an option to buy in the region of £2.8million – on first impressions – looks to be a bargain.

Rangers' Alfredo Morelos in action with Bayer Leverkusen's Aleksandar Dragovic

How many goals has Morelos scored in Europe for Rangers?

We have all seen the passing range that Steven Davis possesses but we now have a player capable of matching it, one that can come in and join an engine room full of desire, commitment and more importantly. quality – the only frustrating thing is that we will now have to wait at least another two weeks to see him don the famous Light Blue shirt again.
