Events across the other side of Glasgow and the way that Rangers have dealt with the “Covid 5” means that the debacle was put to bed relatively early with only the futures of the players involved really up for debate.

A group of teenagers can almost be excused for such potentially reckless behaviour but an experienced international should know better and, speaking to Football Insider, Alan Hutton has spoken about his surprise at Bongani Zungu’s involvement that has scuppered any last remaining hopes he had of a permanent deal.

“I’m very surprised, if I’m honest, for a guy who has got the experience as an international player to get dragged into something so silly.

“Let’s not kid ourselves on; his Rangers career was always on the line because it was with a view to a permanent signing and I don’t think he’s really set the heather alight.

“I know he’s been in and out and he’s not really been given an opportunity but what we have seen of him, it’s not been at the quality that I think Rangers’ standards are at the moment.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve obviously seen the last of him.

“It is a shame because it’s coming to an end in this way, you’d rather it be through football reasons, rather than off-the-pitch reasons but look, for someone of his experience to fall into that trap is just really poor.”

You can tell how let down Steven Gerrard feels by the behaviour of the players and for all that he has praised him in the past, Zungu really should have known better, regardless of whether or not he was going to get to stay at Ibrox beyond the summer.

Will Zungu play for Rangers again?

The Gers gaffer has already been scathing in his assessment of whether or not the South African has played his last game for the club and as we have seen with the likes of Eros Grezda, Kyle Lafferty and Jordan Jones before, it takes a long time to get back into his good books – if he even gives you the chance.
