BBC Sport have stated that Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour is set to have talks with Chelsea ahead of a prospective loan move for the new season.

The 20-year old knows that he needs to play regular games in order to develop his game and he will need to leave Stamford Bridge – at least in the short-term – to achieve that.

It has been said that the first preference would be to remian in England, but other options including an Ibrox return, will be considered.

BBC Sport’s Simon Stone reported:

“Gilmour’s preference is to stay in the English Premier League, although, should Rangers make it through two rounds of qualifying to reach the Champions League group stage, that could be a bargaining chip for a return to Scotland.”

“Newly-promoted Norwich City are also interested in Gilmour, who signed a four-year contract extension with Chelsea in 2019.”

The Auchenhowie graduate was an unused sub in both the FA Cup and Champions League finals, under Thomas Tuchel – with just three Premier League starts in total, over the course of last season.

Impact

Gilmour’s talent and ability was fully evident in his man of the match performance against England at Wembley last Friday.

He made an immediate impact and his presence was sorely missed as a lacklustre Scottish performance last night against Croatia saw Steve Clarke’s side crash out of EURO2020.

Billy Gilmour will have a pick of several clubs available to him across England and elsewhere in Europe – Rangers chance is a slim one, but it is expected that Steven Gerrard and Ross Wilson will continue to monitor the situation.

Champions League football plus the tough demands as a regular first team player at Ibrox would be a welcome challenge and another learning experience for the blossoming Ardrossan-born player.
