One of Ross Wilson’s easiest decisions this transfer window will have been laughing off the derisory offer from Watford when they asked if £2million was enough for us sell Borna Barisic.
A Croatian international who still has a good few years ahead of him and was playing in the Premier League would have another zero on that sort of price tag, we only need to look at the £12m plus that Newcastle United are paying for Keiran Trippier to get an idea of what sort of fee Barisic should command.
That one report claimed £5m is all it would take to see us part with the 29-year old which would leave us with just one senior player capable of playing at left-back is another story but former Gers gaffer, Alex McLeish reckons that – if it is true – it would be an absolute bargain, as told to Football Insider:
“It’s pretty cheap in the going market just now, when you think about it.
“How old is Barisic now? 29? He’s probably getting towards the peak of his career. I would say over the next two or three years he can really play his peak.
“So I’d say that’s a tremendous steal at that kind of price.”
McLeish is right, it would be a steal and that’s why – after selling Nathan Patterson for up to £16m – I’d be very surprised if there is any truth in the rumour, after all, for a Premier League club, the £3m difference is spare change especially for a club that paid £5.5m for Craig Dawson.
