The pace at which Rangers have accelerated their summer recruitment plans seems to have caught everyone by surprise, however, they will have to move even quicker if they are to acquire what could very well be their top target.

Angelo Fulgini, the versatile playmaker at Angers, is a man in demand with French media outlet Ouest France – via Google translate – reporting that Bundesliga side Mainz could beat us in the race for his signature:

“The player would have agreed, despite a stronger interest in another project: that of Glasgow Rangers.

“The finalists of the last Europa League would have submitted two offers slightly under the 7 million euros requested by President Saïd Chabane who would therefore have rejected each time.

“Fulgini would thus have mourned his first choice to turn to Mainz, trained by the Dane Bo Svensson since 2020.”

In short, Fulgini wants to come to Rangers but, as yet, we haven’t made an offer that has been accepted by Angers. The fee needed is €7m which is a lot of money for us in recent times but, sometimes you have to pay decent money to get your first choice targets, Bosmans and pre-contracts will only get you so far.

Ross Wilson has managed to improve the squad without breaking the bank with the additions of John Souttar, Tom Lawrence and Antonio Colak – Rabbi Matondo also expected to cost just €2m and hotly tipped to be the next arrival. There should be money available for us to pay what is needed to get the Fulgini deal, especially when you consider that Joe Aribo left for a similar fee.

If we manage to get Matondo and Fulgini in this week then we will have done very well in terms of the additions made and the money paid, hopefully, Wilson will loosen the purse strings just that little bit more to sign what could be a key component of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s new-ish looking side..
