Alfredo Morelos was, again, the subject of intense transfer speculation during the summer transfer window, this time, it was Porto who were said to be interested.

The Portuguese giants, reportedly had a £10million bid rejected, not surprising when you consider the fee that Odsonne Edouard left Celtic for, and he would have been available for nothing at the end of the season – anywhere near double that and he might not still be a Rangers player.

Speaking on PLZ, via Glasgow Live, former Ger and current Dundee skipper, Charlie Adam, reckons that even if a bid had been accepted, that a move to the Premeira Liga would have been a step down:

“In the Portuguese league, is Porto a bigger club than Rangers? Absolutely not.

“You talk about a bigger league; yes they have got some good teams. Lisbon and Benfica and things like that, but to talk about bigger clubs I don’t see it.

“It’s only him that can get that move, because he need to start scoring goals regularly again and put in some good performances.”

Porto may not be a bigger club but they have won the Champions League in relatively recent times as well as being able to pay their players a lot more due to the money that they have made from both player sales and participating in European football’s elite competition.

Morelos would be unlikely to receive the same level of scrutiny or criticism he currently gets in Scotland too and would be free to concentrate on his football, a luxury he is rarely afforded playing for Rangers.

I could, however, understand if Morelos wants to go to Porto and don’t entirely agree with Adam’s opinion, that he is happy at Ibrox speaks volumes for Steven Gerrard’s management – until someone pays what we want, he won’t be going anywhere.
