Several names have emerged as options to replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst as Rangers manager, whether or not it is a good thing that there is no clear favourite remains to be seen.

One potential option – and the only former Rangers player – to emerge in the running is Kevin Muscat, the Australian with an eerily similar career in recent years to that of Celtic manager Ange Postecolgu.

The similarities don’t end with the clubs he has been at too with Muscat earning praise for a free-flowing, aggressive and attacking style of football.

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, his old Rangers teammate, Alex Rae, reckons that the combative right-back could be exactly what we need to get the best out of a group of players that have so often been inconsistent in the past, especially with a squad rebuild on the horizon:

“There’s been a lot of speculation, my old teammate Kevin Muscat who just won the title in Japan, he’s been linked as well. Muscat will be very much in tune with the transfer market and the J-League, which is something Rangers might consider to connect with a different market.

“The one thing about Muscat, he is familiar with Rangers being a former player. It’s an interesting one, it boils down to what the criteria is and what Rangers are looking for.

“If Rangers are looking to explore different markets, then Muscat will be the front-runner for the job. Some of the Japanese players who came to Celtic who have done really well and hit the ground running, at a reasonable price, so if that’s what Rangers want to do then Muscat will be the priority.”

I’m not sure the Japan connection has much relevance other than that Muscat has been successful in a league that is of a similar standing to the Scottish Premiership, the same can be said of his league title win in Australia too.

The biggest selling point, for me, when it comes to Muscat is his style of play. We have seen across the city what can be achieved when domestic football is approached aggressively and that is exactly what he would bring.

What appointment the board makes will have little impact in terms of where we might be targeting for transfers but will say everything about how we are going to be playing.
