Rangers look set to persevere with Giovanni van Bronckhorst as manager after Sky Sports released an interview to acknowledge his first year in charge, this hasn’t stopped speculation about who might be his successor though.

A name that has emerged recently and ticks a lot of boxes in terms of style of play, success and knowing the pressures of the club is Kevin Muscat, the Australian who followed Ange Postecoglu into Yokohama F. Marinos.

Speaking after beating Celtic, Sydney FC’s manager, Steve Corica reckons that his fellow Aussie would be a success at Ibrox, if he was given the chance, as reported by The Rangers Review:

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Kevin’s being linked with Rangers. He’s just won the J-League in Japan while he’s also won the A-League here.

“Kevin’s very capable, he’s a very good coach and I know he’s very thorough in what he does. Wherever he’s gone, he’s won trophies. I have no doubt he would do a great job at Rangers.

“Of course Kevin would take on Ange. He’s very competitive. He’s a fiery character and very good at his job. I’m sure one day he probably will end up at Rangers. Yes he could do what Ange has, why not?

“Kevin took over Yokohama after Ange. He had a lot of turnaround of players. But he went on and won the league, so I’m sure Kevin could do a great job at Rangers.”

Even ignoring the fact that Muscat played for Rangers, his aggressive style of play and experience of winning trophies make him a viable contender. The alternative, it would seem, is picking up a manager with top-league or European experience but one who has maybe been sacked from their most recent roles.

The only problem – and it’s quite a big one – is that it doesn’t look like the Rangers board will be removing Gio any time soon and, as we’ve seen recently when speculating about whether or not he might go, there isn’t a great deal of potential options should they decide to change their minds.

Muscat isn’t just the best of a bad bunch, he would have been above Gio in the pecking order this time last year.
