A teammate has sent his best wishes to John Lundstram as the midfielder prepares his departure from Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United’s Jack O’Connell posted the tribute on social media, effectively confirming that Lundstram’s future lies elsewhere, as expected.

In a report by Yorkshire Live, the message was put in context:

‘Lundstram has seemed destined for the exit door at Bramall Lane for some time after rejecting a new contract offer under previous manager Chris Wilder.’

‘The midfielder’s outlook hasn’t changed since, and speculation has already begun over where the 27-year-old could be heading to.’

‘Rangers have been strongly linked with a free transfer as Lundstram’s contract in S2 is set to expire this summer.’

‘There was still the faint glimmer of hope that the midfielder could be brought around to signing a new deal with the Blades, but that seems to have now been extinguished.’

‘United team-mate O’Connell has seemingly bid his farewells to Lundstram with a post on Instagram.’

‘The defender shared a picture of the two celebrating while playing for England Under-19s back in 2012, with the caption “All the best my man”.’

Incentive

As far back as the last transfer window, Rangers have been linked with the former-Everton trainee, as shown by this Daily Record piece.

The other obvious motivation for the move is the shared background of Lundstram and Gers boss Steven Gerrard, with their Merseyside roots in common.

Central midfield is a priority area for Rangers to improve as well as the need to add to options, ahead of Champions League qualifiers in early August.

Whilst there may be Premier League options for the 27-year old, the lure of working under Gerrard, European football and the chance to win silverware, all result in a strong incentive for John Lundstram to consider.

The move makes sense for both parties and the player’s next move should be revealed very soon.
