Rangers have recently been linked with a move for QPR’s Bright Osayi-Samuel with the 22-year old attacker soon to be available to speak to clubs about a pre-contract transfer from the Championship side.

Steven Gerrard will face stiff competition for forward and Noel Whelan, speaking to Football Insider has revealed that they won’t be the only ones looking to secure his signature:

“Premier League clubs will be looking. I think Leeds United were interested a season ago. He’s one of these players who plays the wing-back role, he’s got energy, he scored goals, he’s got pace

“They won’t be the only club that’ll be pecking away and trying to get something done in the January window for a pre-contract.

“There’ll be stiff competition, I’m sure, from other clubs.”

It is, on paper, the perfect transfer for Rangers. A player with experience at a decent level who is available without the need to pay a transfer fee and has the potential to be worth more in a few years time.

That he was the subject of a £4.7million pound bid in the summer suggests that we won’t be the only ones that have been keeping an eye on his situation.

Should we sign Osayi-Samuel to replace Jones and Barker?

No

For all that we may not “need” players just now given our start to the season, there is a need for forward planning and it may be that Osayi-Samuel is seen as potential long-term replacement for Ryan Kent given his ability to operate in similar positions.

He could also be an upgrade on Jordan Jones and Brandon Barker, with neither player seemingly trusted to contribute in the way that Gerrard desires.
