The two names who should top Ross Wilson’s list to replace Gerrard

|

Right, Steven Gerrard is gone – the king is dead, long live the king and all that.

Ross Wilson will have a few names already lined up but for me there are only really two choices to step into the Ibrox hotseat.

Now, much will depend on which members of the backroom staff stay at Rangers and who wants to join Gerrard at Aston Villa – two men in particular could have a massive say on what decision our sporting director makes.

For continuity, promoting Michael Beale from his position as head coach makes a lot of sense – he is the one responsible for how we play and for designing the training that has seen us become so organised – we’ve lost just once league game since March 2019 and haven’t lost an Old Firm derby since the same year.

It is assumed that Beale will follow Gerrard but he harbours his own ambitions of becoming a manager, he might not have the same pull as the Liverpool legend when it comes to attracting players but, in terms of keeping the ones we already have, he would be the best fit.

The other candidate, for me, is Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

He knows the club, the idiosyncrasies of the league, has won trophies as a manager on a budget and, like Gerrard, has a playing career that would be respected by every player at the club – he is also available.

In short, he ticks an awful lot of boxes that others on the available list don’t.

I’d like Gary McAllister to stay at Rangers as assistant manager, whoever comes in, he isn’t needed to guide Gerrard anymore and might be open to extending his contract, it also helps that he’s a boyhood fan and a local.

In an ideal world, the whole coaching team would commit to Rangers and Van Bronckorst comes in as manager, but, as we’ve seen this week, the world is far from ideal.
