Ever since the suspiciously, well-timed, leaked announcement of the Sydney Super Cup and the controversial Old Firm derby that would form the major attraction, Rangers fans have been unequivocal in their protestation over the event.

Take your pick when it comes to reasons for objecting; dilution of the rivalry, disrespect from Celtic over the “Old Firm” brand, failing to recognise us in press releases, playing second fiddle to Ange Postecoglu’s “homecoming” tour and the current court action being taken against Celtic, all legitimate reasons for not wanting anything to do with them.

There has though, been light at the end of the tunnel with an increasing number of journalists reporting that the tournament may be in doubt, first of all there was Jason Pine, a football commentator and broadcaster for Sky Sports New Zealand, whose claims were then backed up by the Rangers Review’s Derek Clark, a well respected voice in the Rangers community.

This is a story that is refusing to go away and if Stewart Robertson and James Bisgrove have found a way that means we can pull out, without any financial penalty, then it should be taken as soon as possible to avert any further damage to the club.

The fans wouldn’t forgive the board overnight but if a similar tournament was staged at home, Ibrox would be full. We saw the likes of Real Madrid and Arsenal in pre-season and there is no reason why clubs of similar stature wouldn’t want to keep their players that hadn’t been called up for international duty or those who play for countries that didn’t qualify ticking over.

There is an impending sense of inevitability about our withdrawal from this event, the board has a lot of making up to do, let’s hope they start by making what would, belatedly, be the right decision.

This so called “Friendly” is wrong on so many levels. Rangers FC have rode roughshod over their most important source of income The Fans. From buying season tickets and huge amounts of merchandise . This will not be forgotten by us

  • John Lennox says:

There is a substantial amount of Rangers fans that live in Australia that would like to watch there team play against anyone not necessarily Celtic ,there team has not visited there since 2010 .
