When fans of a club are worried about Rangers poaching their talent, it’s usually a good sign that we’re onto a winner in the transfer market.
This week the Gers have been linked with a move for Portsmouth defender Jack Whatmough, who has been crucial to their promotion bid from English League One.
The Sun reported that we were fighting it out with Celtic for his signature, with Aberdeen also credited with an interest.
The 22-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, meaning we could sign him for minimal compensation in comparison to English sides, who would have to pay a tribunal fee.
England has been a happy transfer hunting ground for the Gers since Steven Gerrard joined the club, so can we snatch up another first-team talent?
Needless to say the report hasn’t exactly gone down well with Pompey supporters, who are keen to see their club move to tie down the player to a new contract.
These fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts…
Needs tying down asap. I can understand the rest of players out of contract. #pup

Could you imagine we didn't give Whatmough a contract and he went to Celtic/Gers on a free…the pitchforks ????

Could play in the championship with us, get decent competition every week and develop as a player. Or. Go to Scotland, take it easy 80% of the time and get shit on in Europe. But hey, he’ll have money and a domestic treble that’s worth about the same as a checkatrade trophy ????????♂️

To be fair, being a lower league player for majority of career so far and having the chance to join one of two of the biggest clubs in the Kingdom. That's difficult to turn down. Playing in front of 50k and possible champ/europa league.

Rangers and Celtic can do one and #Pompey need to negotiate a new contract soon as for Whatmough!

At 22 he is a very accomplished defender and will improve. I want it to be with us.

Imagine we’re in an interesting stand off with him (and his advisers). He’ll want close to Champ wages now, on a 3 yr deal, we won’t pay them until we’re promoted (sensible). Therefore his agent must be out testing the water elsewhere (also sensible from his perspective).
