“Needs to do it over a longer period” – Sutton makes bizarre claim about Rangers man with 116 career goals

|

BBC/BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton has had his say on the form of Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos and his recent transfer speculation in his Daily Record column.

Sutton has long been one of Morelos’ biggest critics despite the Colombian scoring 70 goals in 117 games (as per transfermarkt) since he arrived in Scotland and will take any opportunity to put the boot in.

In April, Sutton described Morelos as a “loose cannon” on BBC Radio 5 live and that he “needs to go”, just as well Steven Gerrard didn’t take his advice given that Morelos is on 22 goals in 26 appearances this season.

He also claimed in his Daily Record column, as recently as October, that Morelos isn’t “out of the woods yet” with regards to his disciplinary problems despite having no red cards this season and just one yellow card in the Scottish Premiership.

Sutton, this time around in the Daily Record has spoken about how well he is playing, grudgingly and, obviously, through gritted teeth:

“This season I feel he really has matured disciplinary-wise and is keeping himself on the pitch”.

“The finish against Porto, we’re seeing a different Morelos this season and fair play to him. He probably needs to do it over a longer period of time though”.

Morelos is 23-years-old and has 116 career goals, he has also scored 70 goals in the last three seasons, and for perspective, Sutton’s much loved Odsonne Edouard has 46 goals over the same period and is being tipped for stardom. There’s not much more that the Rangers striker can do, he has proven over the last five seasons that he can score goals and is improving every year, maybe Sutton is jealous because he only managed 110 goals in his whole career.

As seen by Sutton’s reaction on BT Sport to Celtic’s late winner against Lazio in Italy, he is a Hoops fan with a microphone and as such is doing his best to down play Morelos’ form, his improved discipline and ultimately his transfer value.

Steven Gerrard has already stated that the Colombian international will be at Rangers beyond the January transfer window so there is plenty time yet for him to “do it over a longer period” and secure title 55 for the Ibrox side, much to the annoyance of his biggest critic.
