Rangers returned to Ibrox for the first time this season and enjoyed as easy a stroll in the Glasgow sunshine as they will have all season with a 3-0 win over St Mirren, as reported by Sky Sports.

Alfredo Morelos returned to goalscoring form and continued his impressive domestic start to the season with two goals and an assist drawing praise from Steven Gerrard who, surprisingly, started the Colombian international after claiming that his head had been turned following his performance against Bayer Leverkusen.

With Celtic dropping points later in the day, Rangers have an early advantage in a season that is sure to have several twists and turns in store and have already cancelled out the goal difference lead that the side from Parkhead had accrued on match day one.

Leon Balogun was restored to the starting line-up and Jon McLaughlin came in for the injured Allan McGregor with the veteran keeper not expected to be out for long, however, the defence remains in safe hands as the Scotland international continues to impress since signing from Sunderland.

Balogun was also a stand-out yet again, following up his debut against Aberdeen with yet another commanding display, Gerrard is now spoilt for choice in the centre-half department and if initial impressions are anything to go by, the Nigerian international will be spending more than just the one season at Ibrox.

Rangers fans also got to see Cedric Itten for the first time, coming off the bench to replace Morelos for his debut following his recent move from St Gallen, however, the Swiss international never really got the chance to shine with the game reduced to almost walking pace.

Despite a delay in starting the Europa League qualifiers, games will still be coming thick and fast for Gerrard’s men and Itten – as well as Kemar Roofe – will get plenty of chances to make an impact before August is out, if they can add the much needed “extra firepower” that the Gers boss is seeking, there could be plenty more weekends as enjoyable as the one just past.
