With speculation this week about Steven Gerrard’s potential interest in Millwall centre-half Jake Cooper, Sky Sports are now reporting tonight that the London club have no intention of doing a deal for the 23-year-old.

Sky suggested that despite adding Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson to our defensive ranks so far this summer, the former Liverpool midfielder was intent on adding at least one more player to our backline to give us cover and greater options throughout the season and that Cooper’s performance last season in the English Championship had caught his eye.

Millwall were back in the second tier in 2017/18 following promotion from League One the previous season and they had a very good campaign, missing out on the promotion spots by only three points in the end. With them clearly overachieving owing to the spirit Neil Harris built in the camp, he will undoubtedly want that to continue next season and with 42 appearances across the year, it’s understandable as to why he’d want to keep the man who helped form the third strongest defence in the division.

With a fee of £1million already being spoken about, if Millwall are digging in we’re definitely going to have to raise the fee if we want to get the deal done – especially as he has two years left on his existing deal.
