Until there is an official announcement and an appointment, all we will see and hear over the next few days is speculation surrounding who the next Rangers manager is going to be.

One man who knows all to well what it takes to be in charge of the Ibrox outfit is all round Gers legend Ally McCoist who has spoken well on Steven Gerrard’s departure, a unique perspective from a pundit who was also a player and manager, as well as a fan.

When asked on Talksport, and reported by Football Scotland, who he felt could be next and carry on the good work done by Gerrard and his team, he said:

“It’s a tough one, it really is.

“JT (John Terry) is in the running but do you know another one that has had a mention that I wouldn’t be averse to? Rino Gattuso.

“He knows the club really well and managed in Italy. A fiery character, I would love to see the wee man back. He could officially cause a fight in an empty house that wee fella.

“He had more fights at training that anyone ever.

“I don’t have a problem with any of the names mentioned, I know you’re wanting one off me and I say Dean Smith, who again I wouldn’t have a problem with.

“Gio van Bronckhorst is down the line and I would expect them to speak to Derek McInnes and people like Gattuso.”

Gattuso is unlikely to be a genuine candidate despite him still being a popular figure amongst fans. He may not have been at the club for long but his personality is one that makes him instantly loved by them, however, he would need to have more than fighting spirit to be Rangers manager.

Despite being a relatively young manager, Gattuso is a bit of a throw back, and doesn’t have the same tactical nous as a Kjetil Knutsen or even Van Bronckhorst. McCoist has got a lot of things right recently on the issue but I’m not sure tipping a man who could “cause a fight in an empty” house is the right sort of individual to take charge of one of the most demanding jobs in football.
