And then there was one.

Since news first broke that Steven Gerrard was a target for Aston Villa, there have been sources that have been reliable from the start, one of those is Rangers podcast – and official media partner – Heart and Hand.

Over the last week, their relationship with our communications director, David Graham, has proven to be useful, the former  contributor to the podcast setting the record straight in more ways than one – no pun intended.

Derek McInnes’s link to the job was laughed off, as was a rumour suggesting that Rino Gattuso was in the frame but tonight perhaps the biggest name along with a Vital Rangers favourite were ruled out.

Frank Lampard ruled himself out as a potential candidate for the Norwich City job and subsequently saw his odds shorten to become the Rangers manager – two plus two making five and all that.

The former Chelsea and Derby boss is a big name but he just doesn’t fit the profile that we are looking for, he doesn’t play the same system or appear to have a real tactical plan for his team when out of possession – something that set us apart from many teams in European football.

Kjetil Knutsen does tick a lot of boxes but is still in a job at Bodo Glimt and would probably require a decent compensation fee to be paid to release him and his staff from his contract.

There’s no reason to doubt the podcast’s David Edgar’s claims, after all, he frequently provides such updates from the club by asking the right people the right questions, with two of the bookies favourites out of the running, it very much appears to be a one Van Bronckhorst race.
