Manager Ally McCoist has said that our form and our lead over Dunfermline in League One will count for nothing when we face off against them in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.
Rangers are 23 points ahead of our opponents on Friday in the league, with more than a third of the league campaign left to play and at our current rate we will have won the title well ahead of the final game of the season.
We have also beaten Dunfermline twice so far this season and are the clear favourites to progress through to the quarter finals.
However McCoist isn’t naive, and he knows that the old cliche of ‘anything can happen in a Cup game’ cannot be brushed aside.
The gaffer points to the fact that despite our two wins so far, they have caused us problems in both games and they will be doing their all to make sure it’s not a third defeat tomorrow.
Speaking to the Official Site ahead of the game, McCoist said.
‘It’ll be a great game on Friday against a team which, fancies it and is well up for it. They felt they did reasonably well in the game at Ibrox, which they did, although I still felt we deserved to win the game. We played a lot better up at East End Park and won 4-0 quite comfortably in the end, but the Scottish Cup tie will be completely different.’
McCoist goes on to say that the lead in the league goes straight out the window for a start, as do our previous matches this season, so he knows the players will be under no illusions as to how hard they will find the task ahead of them.
Striker Jon Daly is another who knows that it’s going to be a very tough game indeed, but it’s a tough game that we can still win.
He’ll be confident himself come tomorrow, as he scored his 20th goal of the season during the win over Brechin, but he knows the difference between confidence and arrogance and he knows that if he wants to get on the score sheet again he’ll have to get the basics right and take whatever chance comes his way.
Daly of course has fond memories from 2010 where he helped Dundee United to the trophy and he says he’d love that for Rangers this season, but.
‘If you start looking too far ahead, that’s when you can slip up and if you start thinking about who you can get in the next round, you might slip up on Friday and get put out. So it’s imperative we concentrate fully on the game and make sure we execute our game play, we win the tie and get through.’
