Manager Ally McCoist has said that Barrie McKay remains very much in his thoughts even though he has allowed him to spend the rest of the season out with Morton.

The winger went to the club on a one month deal ahead of Christmas to help keep him in match action during the winter break for the U20 league, and he made a good impression during his time there, scoring the winning goal against Livingston.

Because of his impact for them their manager Kenny Shiels was keen to keep the 19 year old for longer, and obviously that saw his deal extended a few weeks back.

Speaking to the Official Site McCoist explained where he stood on the decision from his point of view, as obviously McKay has been in the press previously saying that first team football was a big factor in his own decision.

‘I had a good chat with Barrie and Kenny was really keen for him to stay there. I watched him myself, we’re obviously keeping a close eye on our loan players and particularly Barrie.’

McCoist goes on to say that he’s told the youngster to view this as an opportunity, and he points to the likes of Allan McGregor and Charlie Adam as being two players who went and did their education on loan for a spell before going onto become full internationals, and obviously he wants Barrie to progress as well and there is no better way of doing that than playing competitive games.

‘Barrie’s in our thoughts and I’ve told him that’s the case. It’s the same with everyone we have sent out. We’re covering those games.’

Ally finishes the interview by saying any thoughts of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ couldn’t be further from the truth.
