James Maxwell is having a very productive loan spell at present at Ayr United this season.

With the Honest Men boss Lee Bullen seemingly getting the best out of the 20-year old, his form and quality has not gone unnoticed, not only back at Rangers but Leeds United have also been linked with the left-sided player for quite some time now.

In Ayrshire, he has recorded 29 appearances and six goals this term – a significant return that has been boosted thanks to a move further up the pitch.

Previously operating as a left-back, Maxwell has often been deployed further forward in midfield by Bullen with the outcome clear to see, improving his numbers and overall game in the process, as noted by the player:

“I’m concentrating on getting in the right areas more and thankfully it’s paying off. I need to keep getting in these positions and the manager has been keen for me to make more of an impact.”

“It’s not always about having nice play in midfield, it’s about being a bigger threat up the pitch. He’s encouraged me to get more shots off and crosses into the box and it’s working well for me just now.”

Threat

The emphasis on an attacking edge is great to hear from a young player as he clearly knows how important it is to carry a goal threat but another danger from the perspective of Rangers is Maxwell’s contract situation with his existing deal expiring at the end of this season.

A parting of the ways could be coming soon and if that happens it could be one to rue further down the line.
