Red Star Belgrade will come to Ibrox as something of an unknown quantity to most regular fans, with the Serbian top flight operating relatively under the radar.

The reigning Serbian champions, Crvena Zvezda as they are known in their own language, topped their Europa League group to seal a Last 16 berth so the certainly will be respected. At the same time, this is a side on par with Rangers and it is very much a winnable tie, a 50/50 contest with the quarter-final limelight in the balance.

Other than to stattos and fervent football watchers, few of the Red Star squad will be household names so let’s take a look at who is coming to Glasgow this week.

Follow Follow fanzine, an official media partner of Rangers has published a handy snapshot of the squad from a source with a keen eye on Belgrade, with defender Aleksandar Dragovic, star-man midfielder Mirko Ivanic (a reported previous target at Ibrox) and new striker signing Ohi Omoijuanfo amongst the most notable players.

The report card overall for the team this season includes the following remark on their European form:

“Another point worth nothing is the fact that all of their Europa League games were low scoring – 2-1, 0-1,1-0 wins, two 1-1 draws and a 0-1 loss.”

That pattern has to be broken at some stage so hopefully Rangers can find a similar formula to the one that downed Dortmund over two legs with six goals scored.
