Rarely can a transfer window go by at Rangers without the media linking right back James Tavernier with a possible move to the Premier League – you only have to go back a few months to see stories linking the 27-year-old with the likes of Aston Villa to name just one side.

With football paused at the minute, it’s no great surprise to see the newsfeeds latch onto often baseless speculation and rehash it, but this week there was a fresh twist when it came to Tav, as it was claimed he’d let it be known he wanted to move on at the end of the season – and in return Rangers have supposedly ‘slashed’ our valuation of him to help it happen, and bolster our own transfer budget in the process.

On the back of this former England striker Darren Bent has said his departure would be a ‘massive blow’ to Steven Gerrard’s future plans, especially given his attacking impact on the pitch, but he feels it’s only natural for the player to want to test himself at that level.

“Yeah, it’s a massive blow. I read the other day he’s not won anything at Rangers which is surprising considering how long he’s been there and the quality he’s got. He’s been there, he’s been a great servant for them but I always feel you need to test yourself in the Premier League, you need to experience to see if you can actually go and do it. If his move is to the Premier League then I’m all for it, the Premier League is the best league in the world, if he can do it, then by means go and do it.”

Plenty will be quick to question Bent’s knowledge on silverware here as Tavernier has picked up medals during his time with us, not least individual accolades, but there will be those in the fanbase who feel it’s time to cash in on him whilst we still can.
