It’s certainly a strange old time in football at the moment with the United Kingdom almost in full lockdown given the Coronavirus outbreak, and this weekend Rangers striker and former England international Jermain Defoe added his own voice to matters, encouraging fans to follow the Government advice and guidelines to help protect people.

Earlier in the week the likes of James Tavernier, Steven Davis and Flo Kamberi had sent messages of their own – and Rangers players are far from alone in repeating the advice given about self isolation and distancing when you have to go out. But whilst there wasn’t much different in the message from Defoe, plenty of fans were quick to pick up on the fact that it didn’t sound scripted, so by default, sounded more genuine and heartfelt – especially his praise towards National Heath Service workers.

“I’m sending love and support from the Rangers Family to all football fans across the world. I would like to thank and pay tribute to all the health workers such as the doctors, the nurses, the ambulance drivers and everyone for their bravery and courage in the face of this immense challenge. I would also like to stress the importance of following the guidelines – staying at home, keeping your distance when you go out and using hand sanitizer. I know everyone is missing football at the minute but there are a lot more important things to worry about. We are all missing and we will be back soon.”

Clearly, his words went over well with fans, especially on social media.
