Rangers may not have had a big spending summer, but clever use of the free transfer market has seen Steven Gerrard’s options improve considerably both in midfield and attack.

This doesn’t mean that when the window reopens in January that he won’t be looking for reinforcements, with one long-term target soon to be available on a pre-contract deal in the shape of Zinedine Ferhat, a player who we have already made an approach for, as revealed by The 4th Official:

“I tried contacting my previous sources from covering Amiens, and finally, I was able to approach a source at Nimes. The source at Nimes asked not to be identified (understandably) and confirmed that the report from Foot Mercato was legitimate. Rangers have definitely made an approach for Ferhat.”

The original report came from France so to have it confirmed by a second source suggests that there is something in it, a £3m fee was never likely to be paid by Rangers given the players age, but on a free transfer in January – it’s a deal worth making.

Ferhat scored six goals and created 10 assists for relegated Nimes and he will now have to stay in Ligue 2 for the next few months after speculation linking him with Marseille and Strasbourg never came to anything.

As with Josh Maja, Ferhat is a Vital Rangers favourite and a player we won’t give up on until he signs for someone else, you don’t have to spend big to get quality, something Ross Wilson is already well aware of.
