With Steven Gerrard trimming his squad this week, he has managed to free up both space and resources for additional recruits that could add an improved quality to his starting XI.

One such player is Jacob Murphy, who, just three years ago cost the Magpies £12million and – according to The Daily Record – is on the Gers gaffer’s shopping list.

Since signing in 2017, he hasn’t demonstrated his finest form in the North East, however, subsequent loan spells at West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday in particular have once again made him a transfer target.

The report claims that Gerrard isn’t actively looking for wide men as a priority, however, if Jacob’s namesake, Jamie, was to move on as has been suggested, it could present an opportunity worth taking, similarly if the likes of Jordan Jones, Brandon Barker or Greg Stewart leave the club then it could pave the way for the 25-year old to join Rangers.

Murphy managed nine goals and six assists for the Owls in the Championship as they skirted with relegation for most of the season but he finished in fine form when football resumed with four goals and three assists in the final six games.

The Rangers boss spoke earlier in the window about adding quality over quantity and the former England Under-21 international would certainly be an upgrade on the bit part players that current litter the squad – hoping for Barker to change a game at 0-0 is at long shot at best when he has had a year to demonstrate what he is capable of, which, if you ask any fan of the Light Blues, doesn’t amount to much.
