Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has criticised his team for today’s performance away to Hamilton Accies despite picking up a crucial three points in Scottish Premiership action.

The Gers emerged as 4-1 victors over the home side, winning for the first time away from home in the league so far this season.

Hamilton though took the game to Gerrard’s side in the second half and equalised with just ten minutes remaining, panicking fans and by the manager’s admission, even him.

As quoted by The Daily Mail, he said:

Performance-wise, we weren’t at it today. We weren’t great but I’m pleased with the three points and the result because all the talk before the game was about our away record and how we hadn’t had a win for eight months.

The points were the most important thing for me but I wasn’t pleased with our display, to be honest.

I think we were actually frightened when they equalised – that basically gave us the rocket we needed because, at 1-0 up, we were too casual and I didn’t feel comfortable on the sidelines.

Ultimately it’s the points that matter most, especially in the context of our horrendous away form, so it was nice to see the team grind it out towards the end.

Gerrard though is spot on with his criticism and it’s refreshing to hear him be so honest about his team. He knows as much as anyone there’s a long way to go if this Rangers side is to be a serious force across multiple competitions.

The hope is that today was another learning experience for the Gers, who need to bring the winning mentality they’ve forged at Ibrox under Gerrard into other arenas around the country.
