Social media has created a new phenomenon when it comes to football transfers, it’s so much easier to access rumours and then find out more about prospective targets with amateur analysts providing in-depth and fascinating insights.

In the case of Danilo Doekhi it looked, for much of the last year, like he was a Rangers player in the waiting, a natural successor to Connor Goldson and the perfect fit for our player trading model – a Dutch youth cap, a lot of games for a 23-year old centre-half, still room to develop and available for free.

When the player himself revealed that Rangers were “following” him it seemed like only a matter of time before a deal was made, however, despite reports of last minute January bids, nothing ever materialised and he has now signed for Union Berlin.

This move could mean one of a few things; we probably never offered him a contract, he didn’t want to play in the Scottish Premiership or – even better –  Goldson is staying.

Now, all three of these could be wrong but, without hope, what else do we have as football fans?

Speaking as he was about to board the plane to  Seville, Ross Wilson talked about players like Goldson, Allan McGregor and Steven Davis and suggested that the ball was very much in their court in terms of what they wanted to do next season, dodging directly the question about it potentially being their last games for the club over the coming week.

A deal must still be on the table for Goldson, would two wins this week be enough to see him put pen to paper? We’ll need to wait and see.
