Gio fumes as he finally snaps at officials

Not taking our chances, conceding soft goals, defensive lapses, goalkeeper errors and officials not doing their job properly, you could almost copy and paste recent match reports and just change the names of the main protagonists.

The fault for dropping two points and failing to close the gap on Celtic lies squarely at the feet of the defence – you can point to how many chances we had at the other end but to concede from all but one of the shots on target that fell on Allan McGregor’s goal is unacceptable.

As with Dundee United though, Motherwell should never have been given the chance to be in the game and, as reported by The Daily Record, it’s safe to say that Giovanni van Bronckhorst was far from happy with those in charge of calling the game:

“We created 30 chances. I know it has been hard weeks but we were playing well and creating chances. We got three minutes extra time, which for me was unbelievable.

“Again it is the refs that decide it. I think with the build up to the second goal, the player (Shaw) was offside and we scored two goals which were even closer with Morelos.

“But when one player is one yard offside they didn’t see it. That is why you need VAR, for these moments to help referees. With VAR, we would have won this game.”

Gio is, of course, right. As we saw last week as well, poor decisions can have consequences and we seem to be on the wrong end of an awful lot just now, in fact, since the Celtic chairman raised his “deep concerns” about officiating at his club’s agm, very little – even correct judgements – have gone our way.

The gaffer has done the right thing by calling it out, we may have shot ourselves in the foot against Motherwell but the ref and his pals loaded the gun.
