Steven Gerrard has spoken of the personal dimension involved in securing a new deal as well as a new role at Ibrox for Jermain Defoe.

It is often said in football that there is no room for sentiment but relationships do matter as this particular one proves.

Going into next season it will be interesting to see how the split unfolds – will Defoe be considered a fourth choice striker in behind Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten or could we see another attacker brought in to compliment the strike force?

Any further additions would surely be dependent on player sales if a serious offer was to be received.

Jermain Defoe’s remit as a coach will also be interesting, given how he has already carved out a reputation at Auchenhowie.

Asset

With the confirmation of the new deal yesterday, manager Gerrard paid tribute to JD yet emphasised how he still has much more to give:

“I am absolutely delighted to be retaining the services of Jermain both as a player, and now also as a coach.”

“It is well-documented the relationship I have with him having known him for so many years, and I am thrilled that he is going to be passing on his amazing experience and professionalism to the attacking players throughout the club.”

“He has shown this season, however, what an asset he can still be for us on the pitch, and I won’t be afraid to use him when necessary.”

“I look forward to Jermain’s return and him beginning his new role when pre-season begins at the end of the month.”
