Steven Gerrard needs to find a settled centre-back pairing and he should look no further than Connor Goldson and Gareth McAuley.

McAuley is yet to even make his first start for the club but given how composed he looked in the second half against Motherwell coupled with the fact he put together a solid performance for Northern Ireland this weekend, it’s clear he deserves an opportunity when the club action returns.

Goldson missed the Motherwell match due to a chest injury which will hopefully have cleared up over the two-week break from action.

The McAuley-Goldson partnership could be the ideal blend of experience and talent, with both clearly ready to take on the responsibility of keeping clean sheets and frustrating opposition attackers.

Joe Worrall and Nikola Katic have both looked pretty good in spells, but the duo are still noticeably raw and have produced performances on occasion that raises serious question marks about their current suitability for the starting eleven.

Katic performed admirably alongside Goldson in the early stages of the season, but the confidence the young player was carrying appears to have dried up and he no longer looks like the sure thing he once did.

Worrall meanwhile has blown very hot and cold, with his comments to media about Rangers being just a loan club not exactly ingratiating himself with supporters.

With huge matches against Villarreal, Hearts and Aberdeen on the horizon, it’s vitally important that Gerrard gets the defensive chemistry right.

If they are both fit and ready, both Goldson and McAuley should start together this weekend so they can start building towards greater challenges.
