Former Rangers favourite Sasa Papac is in the media this morning waxing lyrical about Steven Gerrard’s impact on the club and how great it is to see the Gers in European action once again.

Papac of course was part of the fantastic Rangers side that got to the final of the UEFA Cup in 2008. He went on to make over 200 appearances for the club in a six-year spell.

Still an avid follower of the famous club, he’s been hugely impressed by the team’s recent results and believes anything is possible if Gerrard’s side can take care of the next two matches.

Speaking to The Daily Record, Papac said:

It is great to see Rangers in European competition again. I have watched every game on TV and seeing those matches at Ibrox again is terrific. I am so surprised by it because we have not been in Europe over the past few years and the lads have coped with the games really well.

Now the team has the opportunity to make that next step and the next two games are very important for them.

It is hard to say how they will go. In 2008, we didn’t know that we were going to make it to the final. We just played from game to game and grew up with every match.

We weren’t the favourites in many of the games and just tried to do our best job in every match. This team must do the same and we will see how it goes.

Getting to this stage of the UEFA Europa League is fantastic achievement already and even if the current campaign goes down in flames against Villarreal and Rapid Vienna, I am proud of what the team have done.

Papac may be hopeful that anything can happen in the knockout stages, but realistically this team have a long way to go to match the unit that Walter Smith put together in 2007/08.

Gerrard is certainly on the right track though and given time, we’re hoping to see him bring the kind of success Papac enjoy at Ibrox a decade ago.
